African Americans have been a significant part of the history and population of Gregg County long before it was established as a Texas County. After the end of the Civil War, former slaves settled in Freedmen's communities throughout the county. These communities were established and recognized when Gregg County was founded in 1873. Since 1988, the Texas Historical Commission has granted 18 African American Texas Historical Markers.
